A Small San Francisco Kitchen Gets a Fresh, Functional Update

Project Tour | Kitchen Remodel | San Francisco

When it comes to remodeling small kitchens in historic homes, every detail matters. At FS Interiors, we recently reimagined a narrow Victorian kitchen in the heart of San Francisco, turning a dark, dated layout into a polished and highly functional space.

This project focused on bringing new life to a high-traffic area while staying true to the home’s original character.

The Before

This 1926 flat had great bones but a kitchen that hadn’t kept up. The cabinets were aging, the finishes felt heavy, and the appliances limited layout flexibility. Storage existed but was hard to access. The goal was clear: preserve the charm, improve the flow, and make it feel intentional.

Design Direction

We kept the existing footprint, using color and thoughtful finishes to make the space work harder and feel more balanced.

  • Cabinetry: Slim shaker cabinets in a deep Sapphire Blue ground the room without overwhelming it. We designed each cabinet to serve a purpose, including pull-out pantry storage, hidden trash compartments, and deep drawers for pots and pans.

  • Countertops: We selected Cosentino Dekton Vigil for its performance and visual warmth. It has subtle movement and works beautifully with polished nickel accents.

  • Tile: Behind the sink, we installed Zia Tile’s Aegean Trapezoid Zellige in a hand-glazed teal for depth and color. On the range wall, classic 4x4 white Zellige tile keeps things bright.

  • Lighting: A single McCarren Medium Flush Mount by Visual Comfort centers the space and creates a focal point.

  • Appliances: Every major piece was upgraded, including a Bertazzoni induction range, Bosch smart dishwasher, and LG French door refrigerator.

What We Love

This kitchen now feels like a natural part of the home. The finish palette is refined but relaxed. Everything is built to last. And even with a tight layout, the room offers ample storage and a better day-to-day flow.

Small Details That Made a Big Impact

  • We extended tile to the window trim for a clean, custom look

  • Mitered edges at the counter ends give the space a polished finish

  • The apron-front fireclay sink and bridge faucet add subtle nods to the home’s Victorian roots

From Our Client

“We recently worked with Fatma on a renovation of our house, and we were really happy with the results. At the beginning, we shared with her some photos of spaces we liked, and she took that input, along with the context of the house itself, and created a design that was cohesive and in keeping with the period and look of the house. She presented us with multiple options and was mindful of both our preferences and our budget. I would wholeheartedly recommend her for any project!”
